“I am delighted with the results of the Britain in Bloom competition”, said Chair of Knaresborough in Bloom Christine Willoughby. “This has been a challenging year for Knaresborough in Bloom. For the first time we were entered into the national competition following our success last year when we won Gold in Yorkshire in Bloom and Best Town. We also entered into an unfamiliar category of Large Town. I think we have done very well to gain Silver Gilt. I would like to thank the Knaresborough businesses and organisations who have helped us with sponsorship this year. We were given £500 from Harrogate Flowershows, £750 from the Knaresborough Lions as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and £1000 from Harrogate Council to create Jubilee Way. All of this has helped us to “Up our Game”. Although we were not in direct competition with the other Large Towns, many of these other towns have much more money than us and many more volunteers. Despite the difficult weather, the town has really looked great this summer, thanks to the efforts of the Knaresborough in Bloom volunteers and the efforts of the Harrogate Borough Council gardeners. Knaresborough is a very special place and I feel that the Britain in Bloom judges got a flavour of that “specialness” this year.”
