Flowerbed viaduct proves a winning idea for Bernice, 8

Bernice shows her prize winning design to the Knaresborough in Bloom committee

THERE'S going to be another viaduct for Knaresborough!
However, this one will be of the floral variety, so not quite strong enough to carry any trains.

The viaduct is the winning design of Knaresborough In Bloom’s Design A Flowerbed Competition and will be taking pride of place alongside the bowling green at Knaresborough Castle.

Harrogate Borough Council’s Parks Department team have set to work building the viaduct, which is constructed of marigolds, begonias and ageratum.

The competition, launched last year, was for schoolchildren in the town aged five to 11 with a theme of ‘the area I live in’.

After much deliberation, eight-year-old Bernice Lister from Castle CE Junior School was chosen as the winner.

“We chose Bernice’s design because it was unmistakably Knaresborough,” said one of the judges. “It was also a bold and simple idea that we knew would make an impact when planted.”

Highly commended entries came from Zuleika von Benecka, also a pupil at Castle CE Junior School, Victoria Leigh from The Forest School and Hayden Nelson from Meadowside Primary School.
