Rebecca's river design is tops

THE winning design for this year's Knaresborough in Bloom competition to design a flowerbed at the Castle Top has come from a pupil at Knaresborough St John's CE Primary School.
Every year the Knaresborough in Bloom committee holds a contest for all primary school-aged children to enter a design for planting out the long flowerbed in front of the bowling green in the castle ground.

Nine-year-old Rebecca Wood, a year four pupil, was chosen as winner and this week she saw her winning river-themed design featuring fish, a heron and a dragonfly, in place, having been planted out by the gardeners of Harrogate Borough Council’s Parks Department.

Next year’s schools competition will be to design the flowerbed on the theme of the Royal Maundy.

The first known Royal Maundy took place in Knaresborough in 1210, during a visit by King John, and 2010 will mark the 800th anniversary of the giving of the Maundy money.

Schools taking part in the competition have to have entries in this week. For further details, call Penny Carpenter from the In Bloom committee on 01423 864659.
